Psychiatrists Blast Cruise

The American Psychiatric Association is taking on Tom Cruise (star of Cocktail) for his comments on depression, medications and psychiatry. I know it’s like killing mosquitoes with a .45 but...

From their release:

“It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need,” said APA President Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein.

It is a real shame that lightweights like Cruise criticize, demean and stigmatize people who seek professional help for their problems.

As an antidote, Carrie Fisher’s The Best Awful: A Novel presents a funny, very human look at a Hollywood actor’s bipolar disorder and substance abuse. Fisher’s work is transparently autobiographical as she has openly spoken of her struggles with BPD, including at this symposium. An audio feed of the conference is here.

Here’s video of Tom Cruise killing Oprah.
